Impact resistant glass is engineered to withstand extreme winds and debris that would normally shatter standard glass. A plastic interlayer is bonded to layers of glass, which keeps the glass from breaking upon impact.
This also means that impact windows and doors are much better equipped to withstand impact from bullets, hammers and other blunt objects compared to standard glass.
While impact windows could eventually break under repeated impact over a prolonged period of time, this is usually more time and effort than an intruder is willing to go through to enter a home, as they would much prefer a quick and quiet home invasion. For example, WPLG Local 10 once reported that 2 would-be burglars fired 9 bullets into an impact glass door and kicked it repeatedly before giving up and leaving the premises.
